"Even though our officers were trying to take cover, they were at a disadvantage because the suspect was up at a higher level and they were trying to return fire from a lower position to an elevated position," the police chief said. When the standoff was over, a female and a 17-year-old were found inside the house and were brought to a police station as persons of interest, Jennings said. A later statement said both individuals were female and that they had exited the home following negotiations with a SWAT team. The man then left the house while armed, police said, and officers opened fire and shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. "There's indication that the suspect saw them coming to the house prior to them getting to the front door," Jennings said during a news conference Tuesday. Biden also released a statement on Monday in which he called the officers "heroes," saying he and First Lady Jill Biden would pray for their families and recovering officers.

The suspect may have also fired at the officers after he was shot outside the house, Jennings said. The suspect was shooting at the officers from the upstairs of the house, Jennings said. The violent episode on Monday was one of the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in recent years. The police killed the gunman, Micah Johnson, 25, with an explosive sent by a remote-controlled robot. Multiple officers were hit, and the other task force members called in reinforcements. As local police arrived and began to rescue the downed task force members, more gunfire came from the house and additional officers were struck, police said. Two other slain law enforcement officers, identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction assigned to the task force.
Police said the officers called for backup and they continued to exchange fire with the suspect. More gunfire came from inside the house as officers approached the suspect, setting off a long standoff, Jennings said. When officers approached a house to arrest the suspect, they were immediately met with gunfire and they returned fire, Jennings said. Adams told USA Today that assault weapons like the high-powered rifle used by the suspect in the Monday standoff "do not belong on our streets."
The secretary of the state Adult Corrections Department identified two of the other people killed as Samuel Poloche and William "Alden" Elliott, both of whom had been with the department for 14 years and were on the marshals task force. The only downside is that the restaurant is takeout only, so diners will have to find somewhere else to dig into their jambon beurre. Add mixture of eggs, sugar, milk and vanilla extract after mixing well. Camille’s high winds and water shuttered Mary Mahoney’s for two weeks. Thirty-six years later, Katrina wiped out the entire bottom floor, including the gift shop, pub and 24-hour café. The reopening of the Coast’s stalwart restaurant was a welcome sign of normalcy to beleaguered residents. Not that I needed one, but an order of the world’s best bread pudding is the perfect excuse to head back to Mary Mahoney’s.

Located in a home built by French colonist Louis Frasier in 1737, the main restaurant features a Cajun- and European-inspired seafood menu enhanced by memorable local flavor. An Irish pub that offered an intimate, laid-back atmosphere, and a twenty-four-hour café that served beignets, po’boys, and other comfort foods were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. SISTERS OF THE SEA AU GRATINA local favorite – consists of two delicacies prepared en coquille – the first with lump crabmeat in a creamy cheese sauce and the second with shrimp in the same exquisite cream sauce.
Le Comptoir
Le Petit Paris is a grandiose French restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. The tall ceilings open up the space, and the various seating options are all equally inviting and chic. Upon arrival, the bar is one of the first things you see, encouraging you to post up for a drink while you wait for your table.
If you’re looking for a lighter meal, any of the seafood-centric appetizers fit the bill. There’s old-school shrimp or lump crabmeat cocktail ($14 and $16), crab cakes ($15) and shrimp and crab au gratin ($15), among others. Restaurant-goers can opt to dine in the classic brasserie, choose to enjoy Los Angeles' famed climate in Lumière's outdoor French garden, head to the bar to sip on cocktails and wine, or pick up Parisian provisions at the patisserie. The restaurant is located in the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel, so guests can even spring for some luxe room service.

It's known for its pressed duck, and guests can reserve the dish in advance.

” High praise from a television chef who’s sampled the “best of the best” fare from America’s beach cities. The house and restaurant have survived not only Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina thirty-six years later but Mary Mahoney’s death in 1985. The Mahoney family continues to operate the establishment, which shares its lot with another longtime survivor—Patriarch, a live oak believed to be more than two thousand years old. When it comes to the main course, the prime sirloin comes with a decadent sauce poivre, but the grilled duck breast is full of flavor and beyond tender.
If you've ever been to Los Angeles' historic original Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax, you know it can get chaotic. If you're tired of braving the weekend crowds, or if you're gearing up for a big shopping day at The Grove, Monsieur Marcel is a much-needed oasis amidst the bustle of Melrose. Unlike many other stalls at the farmer's market, Monsieur Marcel offers generous seating, complete with white tablecloths and wicker chairs. If you feel like treating yourself to a scrumptious solo lunch, Petit Trois is where it's at. The restaurant's cozy counters are tucked into a small shop at an innocuous Hollywood strip mall, and its limited number of seats are first come, first serve. Though its location may fly under the radar, its food sure doesn't.
I was surprised to find that Mary Mahoney’s version is light on the inside, slightly crunchy on the outside. Shrimp, snapper and flounder can be broiled or stuffed with Mary Mahoney’s crabmeat imperial, a rich crab meat dish topped with additional seasonings and cheeses. Café Basque focuses on the food and baked goods found along the southwest coast of France.
The Special Potent Cocktail is one of the more unique libations and is made with Calvados, absinthe, apple, and a light egg white foam. That said, the wine list is well worth exploring if you're looking for a proper pairing with your food. The chilled mussels are a one-of-a-kind dish reminiscent of oysters on the half shell, while the bluefin carpaccio is light, vibrant, and visually enticing. From live music on Wednesday nights to brunch on the weekends, Garçons de Café is a fun wine bar and restaurant for any occasion. Though you can easily enjoy a full meal here, Garçons de Café is great for nights when you're craving a glass of vino along with some French-inspired bites. Since Garçons de Café is technically a wine bar, there are plenty of premium bottles to choose from.
The hearing launched further investigations by the committee and continual hearings to combat antisemitism on college campus, ending in Shafik’s Capitol Hill testimony last Wednesday. “If you are a protester on this campus, and you are proud that you’ve been endorsed by Hamas, you are part of the problem,” fellow N.Y. House Republicans who visited Columbia with the speaker made clear they would follow through with punishing colleges and universities if the protests are not controlled. House Democrats descended Monday onto Columbia’s campus to express outrage over antisemitic harassment of Jewish students on and around campus. They included Jewish Reps. Josh Gottheimer (N.J.), Dan Goldman (N.Y.), Jared Moskowitz (Fla.) and Kathy Manning (N.C.).
House speaker says he will send Mayorkas impeachment articles to Senate in April
Johnson was the party's fourth nominee for speaker in three weeks, having taken the place of Rep. Tom Emmer, whose candidacy lasted all of four hours on Tuesday. Two other previous candidates, Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, withdrew their names from consideration earlier in the process after failing to unite the party's various factions. Johnson, a little-known lawmaker who is now second in line for the presidency, attracted the support of all 220 Republican members in attendance, surpassing the 215-vote total that was required to win. Washington — Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, won election as the new speaker of the House on Wednesday, ending three weeks of chaos since Rep. Kevin McCarthy's historic ouster. Since Gingrich’s tenure, speakers are often criticized as too partisan and too powerful, trampling minority party interests. “You have this moment in time where McCarthy wants it so badly and has just been raked over the coals for an awesome four days,” exulted Russ Vought, the president of the right-wing Center for Renewing America, as he listed the concessions the Republican leader had offered.
Editorial: Speaker Johnson must ignore GOP hardliners and pass Ukraine aid now
Mr. Johnson’s hallmark in Congress has been combining his hard-line views with a gentle personal style. That was on display on Wednesday, when he vowed to try to find common ground with Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the minority leader. On Nov. 8, 2020, Mr. Johnson was onstage at a northwest Louisiana church speaking about Christianity in America when Mr. Trump called. Mr. Johnson had been in touch with the president’s team on his myriad legal challenges seeking to overturn the results, “to restore the integrity of our election process,” according to a Facebook post by Mr. Johnson recounting the exchange.
Betting on Trump to fail has made his stock shorters millions
The oath is identical to the one new members will take once a speaker is chosen. The candidate to become speaker needs a majority of the votes from House members who are present and voting. But once Jan. 3 comes along, members are not obligated to vote for the party’s chosen candidate. While it has been the tradition for the speaker candidate to be a member of the House, it is not required. In past years, President Biden, former President Trump and even a senator, Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky, have received votes for House speaker.
“That remains an issue to be resolved,” said Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, as he shuttled between meetings on Thursday. Bakersfield and surrounding Kern County are now predominantly Latino, and Democrats are making inroads. The erosion of white control and the anti-establishment shift of conservatism after the rise of Donald J. Trump have helped spark a bitter shift rightward in many places, including in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are more questions about how Mr. Rosendale and Mr. Crane may behave in the next round. Mr. Rosendale has signaled there are rules changes that could win him over, although it’s not clear what’s left to give him to appease him. As the vote-casting began, a few people packed their bags, closed out their tabs and left.
The University of Southern California scrapped all outside speakers from its upcoming commencement ceremonies, following backlash over an earlier decision to cancel a speech by the Class of 2024’s valedictorian. But now Democrats, fed up with the dysfunction, are willing to disarm the extremists. And now that Johnson has finally let Congress approve Biden’s request for aid to a desperate Ukraine (as well as Israel, Gaza and Taiwan), Democrats are poised to provide the votes to prevent his defenestration. Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required. Architect Richard Neutra's private residence in Silver Lake seemed radical at the time, a glass house with rooftop and balcony gardens.
House Republicans spar over Speaker decision as McCarthy fights to secure votes
The House has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas over the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. The House Homeland Security Committee chairman, Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican who is one of the impeachment managers, read the articles aloud as most senators sat in their seats, following along with their own paper copies. We are proud to present this resource for the people of California to stay informed and involved in their state’s legislative process. Johnson, who also met with Jewish students before his remarks, said he planned to call President Biden later Wednesday to urge him to take action, adding that the National Guard may need to be deployed. "I am here today joining my colleagues and calling on President [Minouche] Shafik to resign if she cannot immediately bring order to this chaos," the Louisiana Republican said to a crowd that drowned out his remarks with boos and chants of "We can't hear you" and "Mike, you suck." Basil Rodriguez, 23, argued Wednesday that Johnson and any lawmaker who backed sending aid to Israel is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.
Mike Johnson and the troubled history of recent Republican speakers - NPR
Mike Johnson and the troubled history of recent Republican speakers.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise threw his support behind Johnson late Tuesday, calling him a "dear friend" in a statement. But Johnson's record on Ukraine funding has been criticized by Ukraine advocates. Johnson received an "F" grade from Republicans for Ukraine on its GOP Congressional Report Card. Johnson claimed to reporters that he's never opposed funding or aid for Ukraine. "He is certainly a far contrast from who Republicans have nominated," he said, adding.
Rep. Mike Johnson has been elected speaker. Here's what to know
In an effort to win them over, Mr. McCarthy has offered to give rank-and-file lawmakers more influence in the process of writing spending bills. One official briefed on that emerging compromise said if a lawmaker took issue with a certain earmark, they could force such a vote. The year was 1923, the last time the House required multiple days and repeated votes to settle on a new speaker before this week’s continuing stalemate over the candidacy of Representative Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California.
He helped shape many bills, working quietly in the background with House committees. He also helped ensure the passage of several domestic measures and foreign assistance programs advocated by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman. The power of the speaker was greatly augmented during the tenure of the Republican Thomas Brackett Reed (1889–1891, 1895–1899).
Reed, however, declared that members who were in the chamber but refused to vote would still count for the purposes of determining a quorum. Through these and other rulings, Reed ensured that the Democrats could not block the Republican agenda. The upshot is that Democrats are empowered like no House minority in memory.
A photographer was among those arrested during clashes between protesters and law enforcement on the University of Texas at Austin campus on Wednesday. Other buildings on the campus in Arcata are at risk of being occupied, and protesters “have shown a willingness” to lock themselves in facilities and steal equipment, the officials said. The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing.
Biden and McCarthy will have to find compromise come January, when the GOP takes control of the House of Representatives and the Bakersfield Republican is expected to secure the Speaker’s gavel. She has written for outlets including the Washington Examiner, Daily Signal and Alexandria Times. Melissa covers U.S. politics, with a focus on the Supreme Court and federal courts. Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, was initially included, but dropped out before voting began. Johnson won 128 votes, and Donalds received 29 votes, and there was a vote of "present." McCarthy, who was not a nominee, received 43 votes. Although Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was not in the running, he received more votes than Donalds in the final round.

Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana won in a three-round vote late Tuesday to become the next speaker-designee — the fourth since Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted from the position on Oct. 3. Trump seemed to acknowledge his role in killing Emmer's quest for the gavel, as he shared on his social media platform an article from Politico about how the former president "torpedoed" the bid. Emmer began to lose support from conservative lawmakers shortly after Trump's missive, and he bowed out of the contest shortly after. "Due in large part to those usurpations, the election of 2020 has been riddled with an unprecedented number of serious allegations of fraud and irregularities," the House Republicans alleged. Turning to Jeffries, Aguilar said the Democratic leader has "never turned his back on the will of the American people." The California Democrat noted Johnson's role in the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

At other times, more junior members may be assigned to preside to give them experience with the rules and procedures of the House. The speaker may also designate, with approval of the House, a speaker pro tempore for special purposes, such as designating a representative whose district is near Washington, D.C. In 1997, several Republican congressional leaders tried to force Speaker Newt Gingrich to resign.

Evidence cited in the committee’s report was made public over the weekend, but Republicans are seeking to hold back hundreds of thousands of pages of underlying evidence that was scheduled to go into storage for up to 50 years. "I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference," Emmer told reporters when asked whether Trump helped doom his candidacy. Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota declined Tuesday to say whether former President Donald Trump was a factor in his decision to end his bid for the speakership. Republicans held a candidate forum Tuesday night with five members vying to be the next speaker-designee after Emmer withdrew. Scalise had been the party's first nominee after McCarthy was ousted, but withdrew his name one day after winning the internal GOP vote.

About two-thirds of that money was for Ukraine, an issue Greene had called her "red line" for moving against the speaker. Any candidate for speaker can lose only a handful of votes and still win the speakership because Republicans hold such a small majority in the House. In the end, it was Mr. Johnson who was able to bring together both the party’s hard-right and mainstream flanks that had taken turns sinking speaker candidates. But the unity was in part a product of burnout among House Republicans, who in spite of their differences grew eager to put an end to the weekslong spectacle of mass dysfunction and paralysis that many said had left their constituents distraught. Rayburn's successor, Democrat John W. McCormack (served 1962–1971), was a somewhat less influential speaker, particularly because of dissent from younger members of the Democratic Party. During the mid-1970s, the power of the speakership once again grew under Democrat Carl Albert.

The chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Bob Livingston, declared his bid for the speakership, which was unopposed, making him speaker-designate. It was then revealed, by Livingston himself, who had been publicly critical of President Bill Clinton's alleged perjury during his sexual harassment trial, that he had engaged in an extramarital affair. He opted to resign from the House, despite being urged to stay on by House Democratic leader Gephardt. The Republicans retained their majorities in the 2000, 2002, and 2004 elections.

The dynamic gained steam in December, when a group of university presidents testified before a congressional committee. Rep. Elise Stefanik, the GOP conference chair, pressed the administrators at the hearing on how they have handled antisemitic incidents on their campuses. Mark Z. Barabak is a political columnist for the Los Angeles Times, focusing on California and the West. He has covered campaigns and elections in 49 of the 50 states, including a dozen presidential contests and scores of mayoral, legislative, gubernatorial and congressional races. He also reported from the White House and Capitol Hill during the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations. In 1989 Speaker Jim Wright of Texas resigned under pressure following revelations about a book deal the House Ethics Committee saw as circumventing fundraising rules.

But Mr. McCarthy’s detractors, hard-line Republicans who have railed against federal spending, have demanded a commitment to crack down on the practice as a prerequisite for supporting him. The protracted fight foreshadowed how difficult it would be for him to govern with an exceedingly narrow majority and an unruly hard-right faction bent on slashing spending and disrupting business in Washington. The speakership struggle that crippled the House before it had even opened its session suggested that basic tasks such as passing government funding bills or financing the federal debt would prompt epic struggles over the next two years. Sources told CNN earlier Wednesday that there was a "big push" to bring the bill to the floor once the House elected a new speaker. The House is now voting to pass a resolution in support of Israel in the war against Hamas – the first measure to come to the floor to be passed after Speaker Mike Johnson was elected this morning following three weeks of a speakerless-House. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos." At a trial, senators would be forced to sit in their seats for the duration while the House impeachment managers and lawyers representing Mayorkas make their cases. The Senate is allowed to call witnesses, as well, if it so decides, and it can ask questions of both sides after the opening arguments are finished. After the jurors are sworn in, Senate Republicans are likely to try to raise a series of objections if Schumer calls a vote to dismiss or table.
McCarthy broke with former President Trump and many fellow Republicans by supporting U.S. aid for Ukraine and likening Vladimir Putin to Hitler. He said, without the slightest hesitation, that Joe Biden won the 2020 election, shooting down Trump’s persistent lies about his defeat. If the motion is brought to the floor, the three Republican votes supporting it could be enough for passage if they are joined by all Democrats in the chamber. But some House Democrats have signaled that they plan to vote to save Johnson.
It also helped Mr. McCarthy’s cause that no viable challenger, like Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, his whip, or Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina, ever stepped forward to offer themselves as a consensus candidate who could end the deadlock. Mr. Roy, an initial holdout against Mr. McCarthy, led negotiations to try to bring about a deal that would make Mr. McCarthy the speaker in exchange for changes to House rules. “We stand here with our democracy intact because of those officers,” said Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the top Democrat in the House, as tears welled up in some House members’ eyes.
Over a year later, on “Truth Be Told,” the Christian podcast he hosts with his wife, Kelly, Mr. Johnson continued to argue that he and his colleagues had been right to object to the election results. The Supreme Court ultimately rejected the suit, but not before Mr. Johnson persuaded more than 60 percent of House Republicans to sign onto the effort. He did so by telling them that the initiative had been personally blessed by Mr. Trump, and that the former president was “anxiously awaiting” to see who in Congress would defend him.

While federal agents were trying to stymie drug smugglers, Keys residents decried the roadblock as a tourism disaster as well as disrespectful to its people. But Key West's mayor and his supporters failed to sway a federal court in Miami to lift the roadblock. Soon after, he read a proclamation at Mallory Square declaring the Keys no longer a part of the U.S. and demanding $1 million in foreign aid. Even in December, the forest and plants at this botanical garden in Key West retain their leaves and lush palms.

After a day of adventure, dine at one of the elegant waterfront restaurants or peruse the artsy boutiques and designer outlets, before heading back to the ship. Though best known for their beautiful beaches, Caribbean destinations offer much more than that — like bold cuisine, colorful colonial towns, and rich cultural traditions from all over the world. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this beautiful park features picturesque blue waters, amazing coral reefs and marine life, and a variety of incredible bird life. The park is also home to the 19th century Fort Jefferson, Fort Jefferson, was once used as a prison during the Civil War. One of the first things you’ll notice on your Key West cruise is the colorful gingerbread wooden houses and the amazing sunsets, and the constant crowing of roosters.
Start your day in Key West with a cortadito, cafe con leche, or Cuban coffee. Coffee is taken seriously in Key West, just like in neighboring Miami, heavily influenced by the Cuban coffee tradition. Cuban Coffee Queen also serves hearty breakfasts, refreshing smoothies, and Cuban sandwiches to keep you going as you continue on your way through town. The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling Carnival’s largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class. WEST COAST
Whether you're watching whales splash in the Pacific Ocean or gazing up at Hubbard Glacier, Alaska cruises are all about wild natural wonder. Key West, the southernmost city in the continental U.S., is the last in a chain of tiny tropical islands -- the Florida Keys -- scattered off the mainland. Dubbed the "Conch Republic," Key West is a very popular destination on Western Caribbean itineraries -- and is easily one of the funkiest and fascinating ports of call in all of cruising. In Mallory Square, you’ll find lots of local vendors selling seashells, souvenirs, cigars, rum, and of course, key lime pie.
The city is not only known for its warm weather, but also for having the most consecutive days of sunshine. Be welcomed on board with a reception as you begin your amazing exploration of the Florida Gulf Coast & Keys. Spend a full day exploring the best of St. Petersburg, including the numerous art museums and beautiful botanical gardens. Also, the Key West Police Department reports are filled with lost-and-found property reports from visitors.
Escape on a delightful Caribbean vacation on one of our cruises from Tampa to Key West. Choose a shorter voyage to the sunshine, with blissful days in both Key West and Grand Cayman. A longer cruise gives you the luxury of two overnights in steamy New Orleans, as well as visits to Honduras, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and the charmingly eccentric Key West. Arrive the day before your cruise and treat yourself to a relaxing stay at the well-appointed JW Marriott, located in Tampa’s vibrant downtown district and close to the Riverwalk. Enjoy breakfast the morning of embarkation, concierge luggage service to your onboard stateroom, and transportation to the ship to begin your journey along the Sunshine State.
See towering mountains like Petit Piton in St. Lucia, explore the lush rainforests of Belize, or boost your adrenaline as you zip-line through the treetops of Labadee or Honduras. If calm, contemplative nature is more your thing, spend the day admiring cascading waterfalls in Jamaica and the vivid coral reefs of Bonaire, home to manta rays and parrot fish. If sharks are more enticing to you than pigs, go scuba diving at Runway Wall. Located right off the coast of Nassau, divers can explore shipwrecks, underwater walls and reefs, all while swimming alongside reef sharks.
If you’re looking for art galleries and clothing boutiques, head to Duval Street. But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time. You can't visit the Bahamas for vacation without seeing the famous swimming pigs of the Exuma Island chain. Big Major Cay is the island most famous for its pig population, with around 20 pigs and piglets living here completely carefree.
On the Western, dive into the crystal clear waters of Grand Cayman or explore the ruins of Tulum when arrive in Cozumel. Quirky Key West, at the southern tip of the continental USA, lives by its own rules. The island is famous as the former home of writer Ernest Hemingway, whose villa is now a museum, and as the location of the Little White House, beloved by President Harry S. Truman. Ride the Conch Train to see the sights, or join a boat tour to snorkel over colorful coral reefs and spot wild dolphins. Browse the shops and pubs on Duval Street, and leave time to savor a slice of Key lime pie. Other ports of call might include Falmouth in Jamaica, where the sound of reggae drifts on a tropical breeze, or historic Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
The pigs aren't island natives, and no one is quite sure how they first arrived here, but they've nonetheless made the island home. "Pig Beach" is uninhabited by humans and only accessible by boat, via a guided tour. Once there, you'll be able to swim alongside not only pigs, but also nurse sharks, and you can even have a sandbar picnic. It's so exciting to dive into the distinct culture here, consisting of Goombay music and local cuisine like johnnycakes, rock lobsters, pigeon peas and rice, and guava duff.

When booking entertainment reservations, we recommend sticking to shows earlier in the week. If, for instance, a show is offered on the second, fifth, and last evening of the cruise, try to book the first day available. In 2022, for example, I booked the cheapest Alaska cruise I could find on Radiance of the Seas. The cruise fare was only $240 for an entire week with $293 in taxes and fees. Having booked the cruise only three months before I sailed, it offered a fantastic value. The ship was built in two halves with the bow built at Fincatieri's Ancona shipyard and the stern at their Marghera shipyard. Here at Gangwaze, we don't discriminate when it comes to our Disney ship size.
This intimate knowledge transcends into efficient and tailored booking experiences. They aren’t just cruise lovers; they’re trained professionals who continually update their expertise. Imagine them as students whose classroom is the very ships you dream of vacationing on—they regularly participate in ship tours to grasp the nuances of each vessel. They step in as your personal cruise coordinators, dealing with the various preferences and requirements of your group. When you book with an agent, you’re not just getting a ticket aboard; you’re potentially unlocking a suite of extras that can make your cruise even more enjoyable and memorable. Your agent tackles the necessary calls, manages any complications, and ensures your cruise plans are smooth sailing.
AND AWARD-WINNING SHIPS
Remember, they’re not just bookers; they’re your personal advocates at sea and ashore. This insider access is invaluable, especially when you want to personalize your cruise experience or address any concerns directly with the cruise line. These agents aren’t booking a trip to Europe, a motorcycle trek across Vietnam, and your Royal Caribbean cruise. They take over the task of communicating directly with Royal Caribbean, sparing you from the long hold times. Use the search tool to locate agents in your area with a variety of levels of CLIA training. One of the best aspects of a cruise is that, unless you're booking a last-minute cruise, you have time to pay off the vacation; the full amount isn't due upfront.
Royal Caribbean Travel Agent Resources
In the ever-evolving world of Royal Caribbean cruises, you might marvel at the depth of knowledge your travel agent possesses. This revelation often surprises new cruisers, who might not realize the full value a travel agent brings to their voyage planning. Many agents become accredited cruise counselors through CLIA's Cruise Academy or take courses through the different cruise lines to become more expert at selling their products. In addition, you can look for affiliations with the National Association of Cruise Oriented Agencies (NACOA), Better Business Bureau (BBB), American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) or even AAA. Remember, you won't just be using the ship as a home base, like you do with a hotel; it will be your home, restaurant and entertainment venue for a week or more.
Cruises
A round-robin agency means you have the advantage of getting serviced without relying on just one person's schedule. It is important to get a sense of on average of how quickly they will make changes after requesting. Whether that's 24 hours, 48 hours or a week, make sure you are on the same page with the agent in timing to avoid frustrations later. Our expert team is dedicated to helping you plan the ultimate cruise vacation, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey. No more repeating your needs during every call—it’s all recognized and anticipated by your agent, allowing for a straightforward and quick reservation process.
Find a Royal Caribbean Travel Agent Near You
Some agencies will charge change fees or service fees when you make changes to the reservation, and frankly, I do not believe that is warranted. In the rare event that something goes awry or you have a very specific request, travel agents have a direct line to Royal Caribbean. Imagine not having to juggle everyone’s cabin types, pricing, or individual payment schedules — your travel agent has it all under control. You may be surprised to know that using many travel agents won’t cost you a dime extra. While not super common, cruise lines will sometimes make changes to your sailing. Dry dock maintenance, for example, might require Royal Caribbean to change your ship.

Cruises can be booked online through the cruise line directly or via a third-party online cruise seller. You also can sign up for email alerts to inform you about last minute deals, price drops and limited-time promotions. In these days of policy changes, future cruise credits, and fear of what may come tomorrow, a travel agent is invaluable because they are the ones that will spend hours and hours with the cruise line to sort out these issues.
Bonus secret: You can transfer your reservation to a travel agent within 60 days of booking
While unfortunate, a travel agent is advantageous in these instances, as they'll act as your advocate and liaison, meaning that you won't have to worry about communicating with the cruise line. Before any changes are made, they will ask how you'd like to proceed and then work with the cruise line to honor your specified wishes. The cruise line then announced a new program to assist thousands of travel professionals in the U.S., Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories dealing with the negative impact of the Covid-19 crisis. Graduates of Royal Caribbean University receive CLIA elective credits, and qualify for bonus commissions, onboard credits, complimentary VOOM Wi-Fi, monthly giveaways, and more. Plus, graduates can download special social media banners to show off their graduate status. Travel agents might also thank you for your business with a small gift, such as a free bottle of wine in your cruise room or prepaid gratuities onboard.

Asking friends who have cruised to recommend a travel agent is another good idea. Their expertise can help you avoid mistakes, whether you are a first-timer or a repeat cruiser checking out a brand you have not tried before. I have been booking into 2024, and noticed that cruisers are gravitating toward the same ships and sometimes booking them multiples times. By offering personalized payment solutions, travel agents ensure that your dream cruise is within reach, letting you focus on the excitement of your upcoming adventure without the burden of financial strain.
You get one person to work with instead of someone different every time you call
Additionally, if you're hoping to book during a sale, cruise lines will often notify travel partners in advance, so your agent can alert you of when the best time to book is. Planning a cruise can be time-consuming, so you should let a travel agent do the majority of the work! Rather than spending your own time pricing out different itineraries and cabins, you can request a quote for all the options you're considering. Since many first time cruisers are often surprised to hear that a travel agent is free to use, it got me thinking what other helpful bits of information might Royal Caribbean travel agents wish you knew about? Royal Caribbean Travel Agent Marketing AssistanceRoyal Caribbean provides travel advisors with a variety of marketing assistance from collateral to co-op dollars and participation in in-person events.
Contrary to what you might expect, travel agents might actually be able to get you better deals than internet retailers or even the cruise lines themselves. The best travel agents have access to discounted group rates and exclusive cruise pricing that's not found anywhere else. In addition, agents occasionally give you extra value on your booking -- such as prepaid gratuities, a free bottle of Champagne or onboard credit -- to sweeten the deal. And if the price of your cruise drops after you book, a good agent will notice and refund you the difference in fare.
If there is one suggestion I give to first time cruisers above all else, it is to use a travel agent to plan their Royal Caribbean cruise. Many cruisers are unaware that the services provided by many good travel agents are 100% free of charge. They are paid a commission from Royal Caribbean, and there is no extra cost to you for their services. The cruise travel agent should have questions for you as well, to better understand your dream vacation desires.
If you are calling a cruise agency for the first time, the agent should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing him or her. The agent should be focused on helping you choose the cruise line, ship and cabin that is right for you. Some cruise travel agents even throw in booking perks, such as a complimentary bottle of Champagne, awaiting your arrival in your cabin. If you're concerned that working with an agent will make your cruise more expensive, don't be.
